This month, Harry Charles Estate Agents explore the historic village of Berkhamsted. Nestled within the Chiltern Hills, this charming medieval settlement provides a taste of country living whilst still offering excellent links for commuters, so it is no surprise it was noted the best place to live in the Southeast of England by the Sunday Times in 2018.
The picturesque village offers a wealth of activities, most in its infamous high street where it offers an array of boutiques and restaurants, including “The Forge Boutique” which sells an array of ladies’ Italian style clothing and “The Giggling Squid”, a popular Thai Restaurant. Emma James Wellness Hub off the high street is ‘the’ centre for physio, wellness treatments and a cryotherapy station. Across the road Yatta is a popular Reformer Pilates centre.
There is an excellent selection of both primary and secondary schools within Berkhamsted, including Westfield primary School, Ashlyn’s Secondary School and Berkhamsted Boys and Girls Prep and Senior Schools are just a few of the many in the area.
The town has an artisan farmers market twice a week on the high street, a pickle ball centre, tennis and squash club and a canal running through the town for great walks and bike rides.
The infamous art deco Rex cinema on the high street shows past and present films with cheese and biscuits and wine, whilst the Gatsby restaurant beneath has a pianist and great cuisine.
With being only one hours’ drive from the capital, Berkhamsted is perfect for those looking to move out of the capital to live but still work in the city. The small market town has convenient access to the M1 and M25. The trains running from Berkhamsted Station can also get into Euston within 45 minutes.
Berkhamsted is infamously known for being the location of the Battle of Hastings, and the ruins of Berkhamsted castle can still be seen there today to serve as a reminder of that. The National Trust's Ashridge House is another excellent, historic day out for the family.
